STAGE COMBAT TRAINING
Shakespeare Miami works with SAFD trainer, Joey Costello and
his staff of Stage Combat Professionals to ensure fight
choreography is safe, effective and entertaining. All training is
free to company members, past and present.
Shakespeare Miami's Producing Artistic Director, Colleen Stovall
says of Joey Costello, "He's an absolute joy to work with. Joey's
ego is such that he can concentrate on fitting the fights to the
Director's needs and the actor's abilities. I trust Joey implicitly.
He puts safety first and fun a close second! He is the
consummate professional and we are very lucky to have Joey on
Over the past 14 years, Joey Costello has been involved in
stage combat as a performer, choreographer, stuntman, writer,
educator and director.
He has been certified as an actor combatant with the Society of
American Fight Directors since 1995 and has continued his
studies and stage combat training since that time. He has
created fight choreography for such plays as West Side Story,
Romeo & Juliet, Hamlet, Cyrano De Bergerac, The Taming of
the Shrew, and Edward Albee’s The Zoo Story.
Joey has also created fight choreography for other South
Florida stage combat groups and created his own workshops on
different styles of stage combat.
In addition to working with Shakespeare Miami, for the past four
years, he has spent the past six years serving as the Fight
Director for the Florida Renaissance Festival.
